The DMC-21X5 series of standalone motion controllers from the U.S. company GALIL are ideal for applications with particularly stringent requirements on price and installation space.

The DMC21x5 motion controller is a standalone digital motion controller with Ethernet/RS-232 communication interfaces, introduced by GALIL Corporation of the United States. It is an upgraded and replacement model for the DMC-21x3/DMC-21x2 series products. Its functionality is fully compatible with that of the DMC-21x3/DMC-21x2 series, while certain features have been improved as follows:

    100Base-T Ethernet communication

    4000x80-character program space

    24,000-element array space

    15 MHz encoder feedback rate

DMC command processing is 20 times faster than DMC-21x3.

The DMC21x5 is particularly well-suited for those who are sensitive to price and... Application fields with particularly stringent installation space requirements. Its performance metrics and functions have been significantly improved compared to the previous DMC-21x3/DMC-21x2 series—for example, faster communication and command execution speeds, larger program memory, and a quicker encoder feedback rate.

Each DMC-21x5 provides two communication interfaces: an RS232 port (with a baud rate of up to 19.2 kbps) and a 100BaseT Ethernet port. Non-volatile memory offers storage space for applications, parameters, arrays, and software, and allows for easy storage and updating of the latest software versions in this area. The DMC-21x5 series motion controllers can control 1 to 8 axes of stepper motors, servo motors, or any combination thereof. They support functions such as JOG, PTP positioning, position tracking, electronic gear synchronization, contouring control, and simultaneous multi-task execution across 1 to 8 axes. The controller eliminates motion jitter through programmable acceleration and deceleration profiles that feature smooth transition capabilities. For smooth tracking of complex contours, the DMC-21x5 provides continuous position feedback with an unlimited number of small linear and arc segments. Additionally, similar to gantry synchronization control, this series of controllers also features electronic gear synchronization for multiple active axes.

To achieve synchronization with external events, the DMC-21x5 provides 8 general-purpose inputs (16 inputs for axes 5–8) and 8 general-purpose outputs (16 outputs for axes 5–8). Each axis is equipped with positive and negative limit switches as well as a zero-position input. These input and output points are optically isolated, significantly enhancing the overall reliability and anti-interference performance of the controller. Additionally, the DB-28040 daughter board can be used to expand the system by 40 I/O channels and 8 analog input channels. Furthermore, auxiliary encoder interface signals that are not currently in use can also be repurposed as I/O points.

The DMC-21x5 series motion controllers allow users to directly select on-board servo amplifiers.

In terms of programming, GALIL provides a powerful two-character command set and a terminal programming and debugging software package, enabling users to easily develop application programs. Additionally, GALIL offers communication driver libraries that support all current Windows versions as well as operating systems such as Linux, allowing users to conveniently carry out secondary development and create specialized controllers tailored to their own unique requirements.

II. Metal Box-Type DMC-21x3-BOX and Associated Accessories

    1. Metal Box-Type DMC-21x3-BOX

The DMC-21X3-BOX is a new product designed by Baolun Company to facilitate connection for the wide range of users who employ the DMC-21x3 series digital motion controllers from the U.S.-based company GALIL. Users connect this device to servo or stepper drivers via four 15-pin D-type connectors to control up to four axes. One 37-pin connector is used to interface with external input and output signals, including eight input points, eight output points, positive and negative limit switches for all four axes, home-position input signals, as well as controller reset and emergency-stop input signals. Additionally, a 25-pin D-type connector provides auxiliary encoder functionality for handwheel operation and a second encoder function. A DC 24V power input terminal is also included. Furthermore, all TTL-level input and output signals undergo optoelectronic isolation circuitry, significantly enhancing the system’s resistance to interference. This allows users to easily interface external signals with the DMC digital motion controller.

The external dimensions (unit: mm) of DMC-2143-BOX are as follows:

    2. PICM-20105 Interconnection Module

The PICM-20105 interconnection module is a new product designed to facilitate connectivity for the broad user base that employs digital motion controllers from the U.S.-based GALIL company, specifically the DMC-21x3 series. It connects to the DMC-21x3 controller via a 96-pin DIN connector. Users connect to servo or stepper drives through four 15-pin D-type connectors to control up to four axes. One 37-pin D-type connector is used to interface with external input and output signals, including eight input points, eight output points, positive and negative limit switches for all four axes, zero-return input signals, as well as controller reset and emergency stop input signals. Additionally, one 25-pin D-type connector provides auxiliary encoder functionality for handwheels and a second encoder function. A DC 24V power input terminal is also included. All TTL-level input and output signals undergo optoelectronic isolation circuitry, significantly enhancing the system’s resistance to interference. Users can easily establish interfaces between external signals and the DMC digital motion controller. Each PICM-20105 unit provides four coordinate-axis signal interfaces. When users employ a DMC digital motion controller with more than eight axes, they will need to use two PICM-20105 units.

    3. DB-28040 I/O Expansion Board

The DB-28040 connects directly to the DMC-21x3 via a 50-pin IDC connector, providing 40 extended I/O channels and 8 analog input channels. The standard voltage for the extended I/O channels is 3.3V; if you require 5V I/O channels, please order the DB-28040-5V model. On the DB-28040, the 40 I/O channels are configured on a 50-pin IDC socket, while the 8 analog input channels are connected via a 16-pin IDC socket. With adjustments made through patch software, the DB-28040 can also receive feedback values from SSI encoders.

The image of the DB-28040 interconnection module is as follows:

    4. AMP-204x0 2-axis and 4-axis 200W servo drives

The AMP-20440 can drive up to four brushed servo motors, each with a maximum output power of 200W. Each amplifier offers a driving capability of up to 20–60V and 3.3A, and does not require an external heat sink. The AMP-20440 connects to each motor via a 2-pin Molex connector, while a single 15-pin high-density D-sub connector is used to link the encoder signals as well as limit and home-position signals for each axis. Extended I/O signals are defined on a separate 44-pin high-density D-sub connector. A DC power supply with a voltage range of 20–60V can be connected via a single 4-pin Molex connector. If you only need to control two-axis motors, you can opt for the AMP-20420.

    5. AMP-205x0 500W servo drives for 2-axis and 4-axis applications

The AMP-20540 can drive up to four brushed or brushless servo motors. Each amplifier offers a driving capability of up to 18–60V and 7A (continuous, with a maximum of 10A). Users can programmably set the amplifier’s gain to 0.4Amp/Volt, 0.7Amp/Volt, or 1Amp/Volt. Meanwhile, the amplifier provides protection against conditions such as overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent, short circuits, and overheating. The amplifier’s status can be read back via the DMC-21x3, and the BS command allows for easy testing of Hall sensors. If you only need to control two-axis motors, you can opt for the AMP-20520.
